I was browsing Facebook lastweek when a BBC Yoruba documentary popped in my face.
The documentary featured a veteran Nigerian Yoruba Actor Lere Paimo. In that documentary, he talked about another colleague who recently died; Pa Kasumu.
I remember watching Pa Kasumu on screen a few times and I can testify to his abilities as an actor. I had seen news of his death too on the Twitter some days ago.
Long story short, Pa Kasumu died after being terribly sick and from obvious indications, he didn’t get that much medication attention oweing to lack of funds.
Not just Pa Kasumu, I’ve seen famous and wealthy people especially in the entertainment scene go broke and not able to care for themselves later in life. Some would even come out to ask for public help if it becomes really neccessary.
My big question is why?
Why would a once famous and wealthy person go broke to the point of not being able to afford medical care?
No disrespect to these amazing people but one answer keeps calling out to me; ONE SOURCE OF INCOME.
I don’t care if you’re the highest paid employee in your organization or you even own the organization. Once all your income comes from a single source, you’re in a mess.
It’s a crime to yourself in this day and age to have a single source of income. Even the wealthiest black man on earth has a handful of income source.
I know you like your 9-5 job, it’s fulfilling and you’re well paid. How about your try side hustles? Maybe with your God given talent, you don’t have to build a full time business.
Yes, your business is doing great, sales are coming in large numbers. How about you build another different business? Doesn’t have to be too far off, you can build a complimentary business.
Great, you’re an investor. Why not diversify your portfolio? Try something else, diversify.
We know you have amazing talent, you can share with a thousand people and still have talent in abundance. How about your try your hands on investment alongside? Try soft investments, paper investments, try starting a business. Just do something extra.
If you’re solely dependent on a single source of income, you’re in a terrible place. You might not know it yet but you’ll find out soon enough.
I really do hope you take my advice and never find out what it means to depend on a single source of income.
There is a reason why one source of water became four to water the Garden of Eden.
Peace, Love and Cold Zobo.
