WHAT YOUR HR MANAGER ISN’T TELLING YOU.

Over the weekend,  a friend who is an HR personnel called me up to help proof-read and edit a letter and I obliged.

I got a mail in my box some minutes later and behold, the subject of the letter read “LEAVE WITHOUT PAY”…ghen ghen!

Apparently, this company was offering a staff a compulsory leave without pay citing redundancy as the reason. Their client had requested a cut down in size of site personnel so it became neccessary for them to cut down the number of staff working with this said client.

You can almost guess the root cause of this letter, no other than the almighty Covid-19. I mean, that’s the reason why the client needed less people working on their project to start with.??

As I proof-read that letter, I felt sorry for this Mr who was going to get the mail in a couple of minutes. He is probably married with kids, has parents to look after, younger siblings who depended on him and he’s just about to get a non-negotiable leave without pay till only God knows when.

If you’re guessing he’s going to get fired should covid-19 persist, yeah you’re right. Now a man has to worry about a pandemic yet without a source of income. Very sad you’ll agree.

Does that make the client a bad person? No. This company a bad organization? Probably not. My friend (the HR personnel) a terrible person? Hell no.

It is what it is guys. Every organization interpret value in 2ways  *clears throat and about to drop wisdom*

  1. Make more money  2. Cut cost

So if an organization isn’t making money, they are out looking for ways to cut their cost. It’s that simple.

Maybe you haven’t gotten a LEAVE WITHOUT PAY mail yet, maybe your organization is such a great one that they would pay you in full even if covid19 last a year(God forbid). I can only say “lucky you”.
But you should know, not many organization has that capacity. Again, if you live in Nigeria where there is no substantial palliative by the government  to help companies keep their staff earning, you’re very close to this mess.

Now, what can you do? Learn to make money on your own. Start making some money no matter how small outside your organization who is probably planning to cut your salary or lay you off as you read this.
