NEGOTIATION IS LIFE
Let me paint you a scenario real quick. Let’s assume you wanted a new pair of shoe after you saw one with a friend. You had for a while monitored a particular brogues at a nearby retail store. You are pretty sure about the price of this shoes cause you asked your friend who bought the shoe in his own area.
You had saved up 10 thousand naira for this shoe and you woke up one Saturday morning to visit the nearby retail store to pick the shoe of your dreams. The following conversation ensued;
You: Good morning, I like this pair of brogues.
Retailer: Oh! That one? (Pointing in the direction of the shoe you were talking about).
You: Yes please, how much does it cost?
Retailer: It’s 10 thousand naira.
You: Errrm! Isn’t that much? Can I pay 4 thousand naira?
Retailer: Errrm! Ok. Are you paying in cash or you would like POS?
You: Cash sir.
Retailer: Please pay (he reaches out to bag the shoe in his custom made paperbag).
What would your reaction be in this case? I bet you would think the retailer cheated you. You’d probably think something must be wrong with that shoe or maybe it’s even of a lesser quality.
While all of this thought maybe right or wrong, the truth is that because you didn’t face so much challenge in negotiating the price, you automatically assume that something is wrong something. Had you negotiated for 30 minutes before arriving at 4 thousand naira, your line of thought would probably be different.
The human mind is built to appreciate challenges when they can surmount it. It gives so much pleasure and joy to encounter a problem and be able to surmount it. When a man is not able to negotiate his way through his challenges and surmount them, then he has an issue. If not, he feels like a champion everytime he conquers a challenge and looks forward to conquering another. We must understand that facing challenges is part of life, when we do not have challenges or get a smooth ride like the scenario I painted earlier, we rarely feel good with ourselves. It’s not exciting.
This new week, appreciate your challenges, negotiate your way around them, it’s a new way to feel good with yourself.
To get to the promiseland, you must negotiate your way through the wilderness.
Peace, Love and Cold Zobo.
